A series of Lesson Plans based on my text book Music Theory Unplugged

Lesson Plan Rational

These lessons are based on a pedagogical approach that uses contemporary music forms to convey the fundamentals of music theory and performance practice.

Lesson Plans

  • Lesson One Rhythm Basics (free sample)

Rhythm is the fundamental element of musical expression. This lesson covers the basics of rhythmic expression.

  • Lesson Three - Melody

Notation is a formalized system used to transmit musical ideas from one musician to another. The point is the more defined the system of transmission or notation and the more ability a musician has to translate that into live or ‘real’ music the more the listener can appreciate the art and skill that went in to produce it whether on a concious or subconcious level. (To be added in the future)

  • Lesson Five - Harmony

So far we have been describing melody, which is a series of pitches one after another with varying values of rhythm and duration. If we play two pitches at the same time or simultaneously we are then creating harmony of some sort. In order to understand more about basic harmonic structures we need to discuss intervals a bit more in the context of chords and introduce chord structures (To be added in the future)
